1. Who we are

Check Your IP (checkyourip.io) is a free network-tools service. References to "we", "us", or "our" refer to the operator of this site.

2. Data we collect

We collect the minimum data needed to operate the service. Below is a complete list of what is collected and why.

DataWhyStored
Your IP addressTo perform the IP lookup you requested and to detect abuseServer-side database — see retention below
Geolocation dataCity, region, country, ISP, timezone derived from your IP via ipinfo.ioServer-side cache (Redis + PostgreSQL)
Request metadataWhich IP was looked up, whether it was a cache hit, response time, errorsServer-side request log

Important: Your IP address is personal data under GDPR. We collect it solely to provide the service you requested (IP geolocation). It is never sold, shared with advertisers, or used for profiling.

3. Data we do NOT collect

  • We do not set any tracking or marketing cookies ourselves.
  • We do not use browser fingerprinting.
  • We do not collect your name, email address, or any account information.
  • We do not share your IP address or any personal data with third parties for advertising purposes.
  • We do not run cross-site tracking.

4. Third-party services

ipinfo.io — IP geolocation

When you look up an IP address, we send that IP to ipinfo.io to retrieve geolocation data. ipinfo.io may log requests on their end per their own privacy policy. Results are cached on our servers to minimise repeated calls.

Google AdSense — advertising

If you accept cookies via our consent banner, we load Google AdSense, which may set advertising cookies on your device. These cookies are controlled by Google. We do not have access to the data Google collects through AdSense. You can review Google's data practices at policies.google.com/privacy.

If you decline cookies, AdSense is not loaded and no advertising cookies are set.

5. Data retention

  • Redis cache: IP geolocation results are cached for 24 hours and then automatically deleted.
  • PostgreSQL lookup cache: IP geolocation results are retained for up to 7 days for performance.
  • Request log: Request metadata (including your IP address) is stored in our database. We review and purge old records periodically.

6. Legal basis for processing (GDPR)

For users in the European Economic Area (EEA) and UK, our legal basis for processing your IP address and request data is legitimate interests (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR) — specifically, providing the service you actively requested and protecting the service from abuse.

For advertising cookies (Google AdSense), the legal basis is consent (Article 6(1)(a) GDPR), obtained via the consent banner. You may withdraw consent at any time by clearing your browser's local storage or by declining cookies on your next visit.

7. Your rights

Under GDPR and similar laws, you have the right to:

  • Access the personal data we hold about you.
  • Erasure — request deletion of your IP address and associated request logs.
  • Restriction of processing.
  • Object to processing based on legitimate interests.
  • Withdraw consent for advertising cookies at any time.

To exercise any of these rights, contact us at the address below. Because we do not collect email addresses or account identifiers, please include the IP address(es) you wish removed so we can locate the relevant records.
